I’ve been lowkey waiting for someone to ask about this because the setting for my latest story is based pretty heavily on Costa Rica, and the reasoning behind that is that I was there back in May and while I was there I was just kinda like “wow it’s so cool here, I wanna write a story about it.”
I do mostly take inspiration from other books/tv shows/movies that I like. Sometimes it’s really obvious, but sometimes it’s just small things. A few examples:
Eragon: I was reading this book when I first started fleshing out one of my first stories, and I think it shows. The story is about a girl who becomes a magic user and is needs to leave her small town because the evil king from a neighbouring kingdom is trying to sort of put a monopoly on all the magic users. She travels across a pretty big distance, enlisting the help of a guy who turns out to be the son of a main villain… I’m sure this all sounds very familiar to other people who’ve read Eragon
Maximum Ride: The very reason why I wanted to have a winged character. Similar to Max, Crispin is also pretty snarky and likes to fight people.
Riverdale (Season 1): One of my stories is about a high school student and it starts off with one of his classmates getting murdered. Most similarities end there, but I sort of didn’t really know where I wanted to go with the story until I started watching Riverdale. The murder in my story probably would not have happened if I hadn’t watched Riverdale.
Rupaul’s Drag Race: Jaire is sort of loosely based on Jinkx Monsoon who is my favourite contestant on the show. Jaire is pretty much the product of thinking about OCs and Drag Race too much. I feel like the more I edit his character, the less obvious it is that he’s based on Jinkx, but there’s still some similarities. The main character in Jaire’s story is Yara, who is named after another Drag Race contestant. It was meant to be a placeholder name, but idk I like this name.
